While keeping our home base at Lecce, we took the entire day to travel to each side of the heel of the boot of Italy. Otranto on the East side, and Gallipoli on the West.
Inside the church. The entire floor is a mosaic of the tree of life, or sometime like that.
In the crypt of the church, there is a grid of columns, all of different styles. Stolen from different previous places? Maybe.
The center square of the fort on the coast of Otranto
Gelato? Never.
Otranto public space by the ocean, some kids were playing a pick up soccer game
Map of Gallipoli placed awkwardly on a small street in the city.
Old abandoned boats near a dock
Boats lined up in the water near the fort in Gallipoli, which had many of the same qualities as the fort in Otranto.
Flowers brightening up the fort in Gallipoli
Gallipoli made me angry because of the litter scattered everywhere. We were here during a crazy time in Italian politics, when there was no head of power for Italy, and the election fliers littered every street.
The beach in Gallipoli
Dinner in Lecce, with some amazing pastas...and some not so amazing vegetables.
I didn't eat gelato that night, but gelato was still eaten in Lecce
