So, Pompeii turns out to be overwhelmingly touristy and full of anachronisms...but when you get past all that, there are some very interesting things. It was raining on us all day while we were there...kinda a bummer, I would have loved to sketch more, but ink + raindrops = a mess.
This particular spot in Pompeii was inspiration for the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, by Louis Kahn, around 1970.

One of the baths, it started storming while we were in this room, so we hid out here for a little bit.
Rain in the streets of Pompeii, it eventually started hailing on us.
Beautifully in tact Frescoes. To keep the sheen on them, it is said they used olive oil, not Pop-Eye's girlfriend...
Ruins after the storm
Lindsey found these giant plants (look like aloe
octopi...octopuses?), and Jeremy climbed down to get a better look.

There are rooms upon rooms of found objects from excavations, I think the dog, here, was the most interesting one. There were frozen in time, in all kinds of positions: sleeping, crouching and covering their eyes, fetal positions, and even protecting their children.
The Baker's house, you can see the oven on the left behind Jeremy.
A fresco in the Brothel...
scandalous.
Ancient Olive Press
Pompeii was a very wealthy city, and some of the houses were
extravagant. This is the "fountain" house, where water (at one time) ran through the gardens. This house was very rebuilt (touristy).

Bits and pieces of Pompeii
Many of the houses had telescoping doorways, I liked the framing in these.
Red, White and Blue u
mbrellas, we are
soooo American.
Kinda scary faces...we were excited because we had been trying to find
gelato in
Paestum (where our hotel was) for a few nights, but they all closed early, but this night we did find it. I do
believe mine is Kiwi and Melon flavored.
